We were well beaten at Selhurst Park on Monday night to dent our hopes of a top four finish.
We were never really at the races in south London, and found ourselves two goals down midway through the first half.
Mikel Arteta made some attacking changes in the second half and we at last began to create chances, but Wilfried Zaha won and scored a penalty on the break to seal our fate.
It had been a scrappy opening 15 minutes or so before the hosts took the lead with a header from a free-kick. Joachim Anderson won the initial header back across goal and Jean-Philippe Mateta was all alone to nod the ball in.
In the main we have been excellent at defending set pieces situations so far this season, but we were at fault here.
Less than 10 minutes later we fell further behind. Jordan Ayew took a wonderful pass in his stride then curled home a finish beyond the diving Aaron Ramsdale for 2-0.
The hosts were well on top by now, and we didn’t muster our first attempt on goal until the half hour mark, when Alexandre Lacazette tamely headed over from Bukayo Saka’s cross.
Mikel Arteta made a bold change at half-time, bringing Gabriel Martinelli on for Nuno Tavares, and moving Granit Xhaka back to left back.
We needed to change our approach as well as the personnel though – and early in the second half Saka beat his man and drove into the area before being crowded out.
Emile Smith Rowe was presented with a good chance after an exchange of passes between Martinelli and Lacazette, but his shot lacked power.
Martin Odegaard had the next chance, but screwed a shot just wide from a decent position after being found by Eddie Nketiah.
Our best two chances of the game had come and gone. And we were swiftly punished.
Wilfried Zaha led a counter attack and was brought down in the area by Martin Odegaard. He stepped up and scored the spot kick himself.
Thomas Partey had lost possession on the halfway line to trigger the attack, and picked up an injury in the process. He was replaced by Sambi Lokonga.
Smith Rowe fired an effort goalwards as we continued to strive for a goal, but his fierce shot was blocked on the line by Marc Guehi.
Nketiah struck the bar with a dipping effort from 20 yards, but there would be nothing for the travelling Arsenal fans to cheer on the night.

This game had the Brentford feel to it
Tonight’s game showed how important Tierney and Tomiyasu are to our team! <== saya setuju 🙂
so damn Arteta. 1000% predictable. absolutely mediocre manager
I thought Viera would take Palace down but he's turned them into a team that has a goal threat and is hard to beat. Good on him.
I believe with this team, come on lads.. Keep forward, keep winning..!!!!
????
What a shame
Michael Artéta he started still because absent of 2 players Arsenal movie theaters something else is not good to give the confidence to torrez this sound good match if you did not give confidence is what he will recover the places and then I saw that you told me is not not happy non no football is not like it's confidence to toroles play he is very like that it is so good of little weak, you're looking for youth. It is very good for arsenal starting championships Tierney still tavares recover his place gives trust to players but alexandre lacazente bench if you ask me EDIKE NKETIAH, it is strong that Alexander Lézaite 1 Message Dark I'm Ill is Ill's Treat

How can u see a defender in Tavares … ?
Guys, don't worry..we will finish top ✌️ stand with our team. come on Arsenal ✌️
Disgusting performance and when is Arteta going to learn to juggle players Partey should never have started this match and now we have lost him for tougher games. Now watch him play Saka at left-back and ignore the lad playing in that poison for the reserves is there any point to the reserve team at all?
open the gates for Spurs, wel done palace
Suka nanget
Hebat cabaran utk 4th place in epl. Tapi team yg bakal dapat 4th places ni rupanya team yg lemah… tak konsisten. Arsenal ada chance tapi MU tu… kalian boleh lupakan UCL. MU players perform macam ayam buasir berak kapor, pastu berebut nak patuk jub** kawan sendiri. End of the season habuk pun tarak. Arsenal terbaik utk 4th places..???
Diobok obok
The foul on the first goal, if Tomiyasu had been there, White would not have challenged in that position. The reason White challenged was because Cedric's first play was so poor.
Was Cedric really great in Tomiyasu's absence?
He cannot use his left foot, cannot position himself to join the build-up and relies on the busy White for headers and challenges in defence. Tomiyasu has no overlap, but he can win duels and contribute to the build-up, while White only needs to follow up.
Arsenal you are much better than that performance .Got what you deserved . Shocking first half !
