Erling Haaland and the Bundesliga Tax

Try The Athletic for FREE for 30 days:

When Jadon Sancho played his last season at Borussia Dortmund his statistics were up there with the best in Europe, but in his debut season at Manchester United his numbers have been anything but…

And he’s not alone, most stars of the Bundesliga fail to reach the same highs when they play in the Premier League. This drop off is known as the Bundesliga Tax.

Why does it happen? Is the Bundesliga alone?

Jon Mackenzie explains, Henry Cooke illustrates.

Heung-Min Son has no Bundesliga tax

  2. jw_mufc dijo:

No mention of teams tactics playing a part in the down tick in performance like Werner and Lukaku being used as target men despite being very much not target men

  3. So poorly managed PL clubs who doesn't care much about the player and pushing him in another situation on the pitch is the problem. M.united thing is another side of problem – what to expect form new player in such a mess?

  4. Neil Menezes dijo:

Doesn't make sense at all.. Because both the factors.. Team success and age are the same for Timo werner and Kai havertz but they have underperformed.

  5. Trueno AE86 dijo:

City's last 3 Bundesliga signings: De Bruyne, Gundogan, Sané. They don't know what the Bundesliga tax is

  6. Haaland is going to score 30 goals sancho was never that good

  7. Felix Ro dijo:

Ofc Sancho's stats are dropping like crazy when moving from being an undisputed starter at the 2nd best team in the league to a bench warmer for a mid table tier team in another league.

  8. Havertz hasn't been disappointing…..have you been watching any football????

  9. This is obviously a narrative been pushed… Usually most players have a drop off when they have to relocate to somewhere that's new (look at Messi at PSG). This phenomenon should be called the Transfer Tax.

  10. Nearh dijo:

I didn't knew Aston Villa was a Bundesliga team that explains a lot about that 100M signing!

  11. Bart dijo:

even as a roy keane fan, i am happy to see a Haaland in the PL again !!

  12. Dark Invader dijo:

Would you make videos on coutinho or hazard who declined massively when coming to laliga or you so called analysts are clearly biased towards pl

  13. Zahin Rahman dijo:

This has to be one of the most redundant videos ever made in the history of everything

  14. Gamers BK dijo:

    Worst video from yall

  15. dripking 12 dijo:

can you guys make a video about nkunku i feel like he’s going to be one of the best attackers this season

  16. A S dijo:

A video of 5:24 to be told he is more likely to be like De Bruyne than Sancho…KMT

  17. This man has a career for a having a beautiful voice

  18. Tyler XL dijo:

Think it’s too early to write Sancho off

  19. Bruyne is definitely overrated

  20. CYMotorsport dijo:

This seems cynically rooted and statistically dubious. It violates confirmation bias egregiously. What is the longitudinal evidence here? The sample size is quite large. Has anyone confirmed this statistical correlation? It’s less than a days worth of effort. Man city in particular have “trend breakers”. This seems like an odd formula only one side of the table came up with.

  21. so hows the Bundesliga tax on Son Heung Min & Kevin De Bruyne?

  22. Laurin Wey dijo:

This is so stupid. It‘s just a „German coaches have to get the most out of their young players while in England they just spend 50 Million on another player if they don’t play like messi in the first seasons“-tax. The highest coaching license in Germany is the „Football Teacher license“, there is a huge focus on young players and development, while there are just huge disparities in the English development area and culture in general.

  23. Football is not an Europian Sports Tifo
I wanted make video On some Asian countries Like Japan Korea India etc

  24. Whole video is a major reach

  25. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang never had this tax

  26. I really hate when a narrative is shoved in my face so hard. There are so many amazing and now succesful players coming from the bundesliga to the prem. They are just not mentioned to please those who wants to believe in a term like ''bundesliga tax''.

  27. Yvan Tanke dijo:

Should had included son is this too

  28. Kagawa started the trend.

  29. Why use the EU flag to describe a UEFA competition?

  30. Jonathan dijo:

Pointless video. Unfair to just call out Sancho like that, would’ve made more sense to compare Haaland to Werner instead. Lots of Bundesliga players have performed well in the Premier League, like Son

  31. ManU … where promising young careers crumble under the expectations.

  32. Benjamin D. dijo:

Why singling out the premier league?? It could simply be that players perform less when they change club…

  33. mike heap dijo:

Why do they produce this and focus on Haaland after we sign him. Don't forget City players not just KDB produce better stats than they did in the Bundersliga. So they should have summarised that this tax does not apply to City players.

  34. miesterZD dijo:

I think it’s a no brainer that Haaland will perform better than Sancho, simply because he’s better. Haaland is a once in a lifetime kinda talent that will only get better with time.

  35. It's assumed that it's better for Premier League clubs to loan out their talented young players to leagues such as the Eredevise or the Bundesliga. Do you agree with this? Or do you think PL sides are better off loaning out players to the Championship? When Jason Sancho moved to Dortmund at 17 (I know it wasn't on loan) people applauded him for doing so, saying more young English players should do the same. But after impressing with Dortmund where he gained experience and confidence, he's struggled in the Premier League. Would he have been better off not going to Germany at all?

  36. 88Deer dijo:

The tax is simply because leagues manage differently. Germany is faster flowing and more tactical while England is slower and less scoring means it’s tough to adapt

  37. Aris Cirillo dijo:

unsubbed usless content from random bum

  38. I wonder if Kevin De Bruyne’s success is related to his previous Premiere League experience.

  39. Andrew James dijo:

What I am curious to know though is the cost of those transfers in the “tax” at those high transfer fees you expect out put. Obviously young/old players and non “world class” or top level players will struggle coming from easier leagues to play in the premier league but these high transfer fee players are held to higher standards

  40. I like to mention that salah dubbled his numbers from his least season in seria a in his first pl season. I, as a bundesliga, like to think that a lot of premier league clubs just buy wahtever is hot right now in european football and not what fits theor playing style. You always hear "manu/ arsenal/chelsea wanna buy that wonderboy". But there are other clubs like liverpool and mancity, who have not shown significant decreases in performance from bundesliga teams (De bruyne, gündogan, sane, konate, Thiago, matip). Thats because they buy what fits their system. Now, i honestly dont think haaland fits man citys system and nunez doesnt fit liverpools system but well see

  41. Mark Law dijo:

KDB doesn't count cos he started at Chelsea like Salah.

  42. Mayuresh Jog dijo:

Problem with EPL is slower game compared to Bundesliga which creates less goals but the fans too put too much pressure on players. EPL players are overrated before they can fully grow which crushes young talents. Lack of passion or we can say "Toxic passion" of English fans is a big big factor. The gap between quality of top 3 EPL teams and 4th down is very high. All these factors together and more causes the "Tax" from around the world

  43. S K dijo:

Don't know why people disregard the stats tbh, it's not a myth if your stats show this happens for a fact… Is it so hard to accept that Prem is a tough league? Even for the best. Also, people are misinterpreting what they are saying when they mean "TAX". Not that Prem players are better than Bundesliga, there saying if you have these numbers in the Bundesliga if you come to the prem due to its makeup, your numbers will probably drop by x amount in this case say 17%. I can already see in the comments people making it a identity thing

  44. Prajakt Wale dijo:

If intentional, the use of the 'dirty' charts as a prank was a masterstroke. Made me get up and wipe my tv screen thinking they were actual smudges on my screen. Surprisingly, no one in the comments section seems to have noticed them.

  45. Players like Joel Matip scupper any concept of the Bundesliga tax, nothing special in Germany but integral for the second best team in England
